SMS ATHLETICS … FEBRUARY 26TH TO MARCH 1ST

Gr. 8 Boys' and Girls' Basketball Play-Off Update...

***Congratulations to our Gr. 8 Boys' Basketball Teams … SMS3 defeated SMS2 in the Zone Final on Thursday to win the Championship. The teams finished 1st and 2nd respectively and all the boys, on both teams, completed hard, played well, and improved so much throughout the season. Our SMS1 team, who represents our school in the Banner League of the Gr. 8 Boys' North Okanagan Zones finished 4th last Tuesday, after losing a close game to Kalamalka in the bronze medal game. Our Gr. 8 Girls’ basketball team finished 3rd in the girl’s zone league, after defeating LenWood Middle School in their final game of the season. Congratulations to all teams on a fantastic season!

Club Basketball begins soon… stay tune!

GREAT OPPORTUNITY BELOW..

***The Basketball Camp highlighted below is a Great Opportunity and we are hoping as many of our SMS basketball players - girls and boys - take advantage of the camp being offered. The Camp is a fundraiser and will raise money for our SMS Basketball Program for next season. Go online to the website to register.

***Shuswap Athletics is sponsoring a basketball camp at Spring Break for our local athletes. “Court to Campus” Spring Break Elite Development Basketball Camp will take place at Shuswap Middle School from March 22 to March 25 … Please go to the Website for details and registration (https://courttocampus.wixsite.com/courttocampus … The camp will be an excellent opportunity for our local athletes to work with Elite USport Athletes from Thompson Rivers University and UBC… The Camp will fill up quickly, so register early to secure your spot. Mr. Smith invites University Coaches and Athletes every year to run Basketball or Volleyball Camps at SMS and those who run the camps, like Court to Campus this year, will donate a portion of their proceeds to our SMS Basketball Program. … Please Note: Chad Grimm (Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at TRU) will be returning to SA and SMS to run a Volleyball Camp in June … Check back for details.

REMINDER… Coaches are Volunteers. Teachers who Coach a School Athletic Team don’t get paid and Coaching is not part of our Job Description. We do not get paid to open the gym in the early morning, at lunch, after school, on the weekends, or when we take our teams to weekend tournaments.  Educators Volunteer to Coach because we know the opportunities that playing on a school sport team provides for our students and the potential doors that are opened for them. By participating on a school team, students contribute to school culture and they are provided the opportunities to work on their overall development, growth, and wellbeing. We encourage all of our SMS Students to get involved in our SMS Athletic Program by trying a sport they like and participating on one or more of our school teams each year. Those who are committed and get involved, open doors.

Our SMS Staff would like to thank everyone for their continued support of our Athletic Program at Shuswap Middle School.

“The best thing we can do for kids… Instead of teaching them how to always be successful… Teach them how to respond when they are not successful!”   ~ Principal El

Gr. 6/7 Basketball Continue this week…

Gr. 6/7 Boys’ Basketball …

This Week... Friday Morning with Mr. Smith and our Gr. 8 Mentors … 7AM to 8:10AM … Gym doors open at 7:50AM… Wednesday after school with Mr. Noble/Mrs. Dewitt, and Mme King … Three outstanding educators/coaches who have extremely high levels of experience in both sport and coaching… Our Gr. 6/7 Boys Basketball Program is very fortunate to have these three adults leading our program. Wednesdays will be an Instructional League with 3on3 games to start and our Wednesday Instructional League.

Gr. 6/7 Girls’ Basketball …

This Week...  Friday After School … 2:45 to 4:15

***Participants in our Gr. 6/7 Basketball Program must wear proper gym shorts, t-shirt, and running shoes… Basketball Shoes or a good court shoe are strongly suggested. Joggers, running shoes, trainers are not great shoes for basketball and they don’t provide the support that a young, developing, growing athlete requires when playing the game of basketball. Please keep in mind … Good does not mean expensive. Both of Mr. Smith’s sons wore affordable basketball shoes from Walmart (Shaq Brand) when they were first starting out. A good heal lock and grippy sole of on-court performance is all that is needed. Runners/joggers/trainers were not constructed and meant for court activities.

Cost for our Gr. 6/7 Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Program = $10.00 … This fee needs to be paid at the office…

Reminder… 5 Ways to Develop Mental Toughness and Resiliency …

1. Get up Early… when the alarm goes off, don’t hit the snooze … get out of bed…

2. Make Your Bed as a Habit… as soon as you get up make your bed - perfectly! Start the day with a Win!

3. Do Work… Attend AM Open Gym or if not, do push-ups, sit-ups, etc…

4. When the School Day is Over… Study First … If you have early Bball Practice, then study after practice… If you have late Bball Practice, then stay at school, attend Study Hall and Do Your Work… Read, Re-Read, Write, Re-Write, Review - That’s what homework is…

5. Eat Something You Don’t Like Regularly… as a Habit… Mr. Smith doesn’t let tomatoes be tougher than him… He still doesn’t like tomatoes, but he eats them anyway…

Why do all the things above … because they are usually the last things you want to do… Do the things that you don’t want to do, but that are good for you, and make them a part of your Daily Habits… That’s how one Develops Mental Toughness.
