GRADE 8 GIRLS' & BOYS' BASKETBALL SCHEDULES HAVE BEEN UPDATED

Thanks for your patience. Our grade 8 basketball team practice schedules and tournament schedules have been updated. It has taken some time; however, between the coaches and players, we have worked out a schedule that appears to accommodate most of the athletes interested in playing. Shuswap will have two (2) grade 8 boys' teams this year and our girls will have one team. All three teams are entered into the North Okanagan League which competes in Vernon on Monday nights. Please check out the tournament schedule for our grade 8 teams. These tournament and dates can be found on the blog. More information to follow.

GRADE 8 BASKETBALL TRYOUTS TODAY...

Hey Folks... There have been lots of questions raised by parents about today's Gr. 8 boys' and girls' basketball tryouts - try-ons. Last week, I made announcements in our Gr. 8 PE classes and over the PA to let our grade 8's know that tryouts need to take place this week as I am attending a meeting next Monday to declare our teams at the NOAA in Vernon. We, at SMS, need to know  what our teams look like so that we as an athletic association can make decisions and shape our leagues in the North Okanagan accordingly. It must be noted that grade 8 athletics is no longer a part of the elementary league in SD83. A lot of time, energy and effort goes into planning our teams and leagues. Not only do we have a responsibility as a school to be organized to the NOAA, we also have a responsibility to BC School Sports and our membership.
Practice schedules for gym time take a lot of time to organize, as does registering individual players and teams for BC School Sports. Deadlines must be met. My intention last week was to have the grade 8 athletes interested in playing basketball for SMS to communicate the tryout times with home. These times may be different than usual practice times during the season. We had to use the time in the gym available since volleyball season is still going on. I am still coaching the grade 6/7 girls and boys, the grade 8 volleyball teams; so, my own time is precious and spread thin. There is an overlap between volleyball and basketball every year. I really appreciate it when our athletes, especially our grade 8's can help in the communication with home.
Practice today for grade 8's (boys and girls) is from 4:00 to 5:30 ... Wednesday, Nov. 6th practice will be from 4:30 to 6:00.
Practice times next week for gr. 8 basketball will be on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 4:00 - 5:30 and Friday, Nov. 15, from 2:30 to 4:00.

SMS GR. 6-7-8 VOLLEYBALL INFORMATION

Grade 6/7 Boys' and Girls' Volleyball:
Once a schedule has been finalized and team organized, forms and fee information will be sent home. The cost for our Gr. 7 Program is $20, while the fee for our Gr. 6 Program is $10. Money can be turned in with forms once all forms have been sent home and a due date has been set.


Grade 8 Boys' and Girls' Volleyball:
A letter was sent home with our players today. A parent/player meeting with the coaches is set for Thursday, September 26, 2019, at 6:30, in the SMS gym. Forms and fee information will be handed out at Wednesday morning's practice, so that parents and players can fill them out, and return the forms completed at the meeting on Thursday. Fees for grade 8 volleyball will be calculated and be determined by the meeting on Thursday. All fees will be due and must be turned into the office by Monday, September 30, 2019.

OPEN GYM ... DAY #1 WAS FANTASTIC...

Open gym doesn't officially begin until Monday, September 9th; however, today (Thurs., Sept. 5th) and tomorrow are bonus days for our students during the AM in the gym. Today is the first open gym and we have sixteen (16) students out playing both basketball and volleyball. Four girls and twelve boys. Seven grade 8's, three grade 7's, and six grade 6's. GREAT START TO THE YEAR! Please remind your child that open gym is on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Check out the "AM Open Gym" tab on our blog for more information.

2019 FALL SPORTS FOR GRADE 6 - 8 ATHLETES AT SMS

Those students interested in competing on a Shuswap Athletic team next year need to make note of the sports available each season, the practice days, the practice times, and game days. Some practice days and times may change depending on who is coaching the team and the coach's availability. Full commitment to the team and season of play, which includes attending practices, and competing in all games meets some of our core values as it pertains to our Shuswap Athletic Program. GRADE 6/7 TRACK AND FIELD BEGINS

Our grade 6/7 boys' and girls' track and field team has begun at SMS. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. Practices will run from 2:30 - 3:00 each day. GRADE 6/7 BOYS' BASKETBALL INFORMATION

Reminder, the $20.00 Team Fee must be paid to the office before Wednesday, January 30, 2019. If the Fee is not paid, your child will not be able to compete in the games. If the Fee is an issue, please contact Aaron Smith or Wendy Woodhurst at the school. Also a reminder, players must attend practice to play. If a player misses practice for what ever reason, he will not be permitted to play in the next game.

GRADE 7 BOYS' AND GIRLS' BASKETBALL PRACTICE TOMORROW

Yes... There will be a Gr. 7 boy's and girls' basketball practice tomorrow morning starting at 7:00 AM and running until 8:05 AM. We will also continue our practices on Tuesday morning.
Gr. 6/7 Boys' Basketball After School Practices will begin on Wednesday starting at 2:30 after school and going until 4:00. Players who attend the morning sessions cannot attend the after school practices.
