SMS Athletics … May 20th to May 23rd

***Turnout for AM Open Gym has low since our return from Spring Break. Volleyball numbers were extremely low. Most of the participants were from Jackson and in grade 9. Basketball numbers have been at 9 players per open gym; as a result, the numbers are lower than they have been since our early years of middle school. I enjoy opening the gym for our students; however, I have lots that I need or would like be doing before school starts in the mornings, and when our numbers are low it’s becoming tough to make a commitment. I appreciate the players/students who consistently show up during the open gym opportunities. They work hard, have fun, and I know they get frustrated when the gym is not open and/or sessions are cancelled. That being said… I will open the gym this week for basketball players in grades 6, 7, and 8, on Tuesday and Thursday; however, if participation numbers do not improve this week, then this will be the last week I will be able to open the gym during the AM at SMS. … ~ Mr. Smith

SMS ATHLETICS … APRIL 28th to MAY 2nd … AM Basketball Camp Begins This Week…

***Information about SMS Flag Football has been posted. Please “Click” the Tab for Flag Football above … More information will be posted each week.

*** “Off-season preparation is crucial for middle school basketball and volleyball players as it provides a structured time for focused skill development, physical conditioning, and building a strong foundation for future performance. This period allows players to refine techniques, improve weaknesses, and enhance overall athletic ability without the pressure of competing.” ~ At least that’s what AI states and it’s a belief that we (Smith/Henderson) fully support and believe to be true.

For the past 40 years coaching basketball and volleyball, those players/teams who prepared, committed to AM training sessions, worked on their skill development, payed games, and created a common sacrifice to get better … did better and were able to compete against the best teams the next school year.

There is no secret to Success … put in the time and one will get better, and as it pertains to “Team” sports, one cannot do it alone; so, when the Team commits together and creates that “common sacrifice” - the “Team” undoubtedly gets better. Those Teams that work together to develop skill, develop culture, build community, and get better together, … open doors, create opportunities, and create experiences that can be extremely rewarding for everyone involved.

By showing up in the AM to Open Gym Opportunities - yes, it’s difficult and requires a commitment from family members; however, it’s short lived and the benefits are so rewarding - individuals get better, and when a “Team” commits together, the “Team” pushes themselves to new heights and experiences.

So…

IMPORTANT INFO: … AM GYM OPPORTUNITIES … Basketball Camp and Volleyball Camp … Beginning Tuesday (April 29th), at 7AM sharp, Mr. Henderson (SMS Gr 8 Boy’s Basketball Coach) and I (Mr. Smith) will be starting and offering a Basketball Camp … for … SMS Gr. 6/7/8 boys and girls who are planning on playing basketball at SMS next season (2025-2026). The camp will help individual players opportunities to work on skills and fundamentals, and it will provide an opportunity for individual players to improve and increase their physical literacy in the sport of basketball. The camp will also provide an opportunity and give a head start for the “Team” to work on, learn, and understand both offensive, defensive, and transition concepts that will be used and covered next season.

Cost = Free … Time = 7AM Sharp to 8:10AM (players have time to get ready for Period #1) … Days = Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Tuesday, April 29th to Thursday, May 22nd … Extra Gym Time = Wednesdays (April 30th to June 18th) - Basketball shares the gym with Volleyball (Games) … Registration will take place tomorrow morning - players will sign up once they arrive (Name and grade on a sheet of paper … that’s it).

SMS ATHLETICS … April 22nd to April 25th

***Information about SMS Flag Football has been posted. Please “Click” the Tab for Flag Football above … More information will be posted each week.

IMPORTANT INFO: … AM OPEN GYM OPPORTUNITIES … will begin Friday, April 11th. Both Volleyball and Basketball Training Sessions will be provided for students who attend SMS, Jackson, and Sullivan. The days in which these opportunities will be offered are yet to be determined; however, we do know that both sports will be provided two training sessions per week and the sport that has the greatest interest will be provided a third day.

Both Basketball and Volleyball are out-of-season sports at this time; however, if one wants to get better and improve their physical literacy in either sport, then one needs to put in a lot of time to honing their craft by developing their skills and knowledge of the game in the off-season. With purposeful practice, great effort, commitment, and time put into developing one’s craft, an individual provides themselves with greater opportunities moving forward.

Those student-athletes who attend AM Basketball or AM Volleyball Sessions on a regular basis, and who attend SMS, will be provided opportunities throughout the spring to compete in Lunch Hour games against each other and against the staff.

For those student-athletes who attend Jackson or Sullivan, you are being an opportunity to get more touches, put more time into your sport/craft, and you are being provided an opportunity to lead others whom you could be playing with in the future.

**** REMINDER… **** Coaches are Volunteers. Teachers who Coach a School Athletic Team don’t get paid and Coaching is not part of our Job Description. We do not get paid to open the gym in the early morning, at lunch, after school, on the weekends, or when we take our teams to weekend tournaments.  Educators Volunteer to Coach because we know the opportunities that playing on a school sport team provides for our students and the potential doors that are opened for them. By participating on a school team, students contribute to school culture and they are provided the opportunities to work on their overall development, growth, and wellbeing. We encourage all of our SMS Students to get involved in our SMS Athletic Program by trying a sport they like and participating on one or more of our school teams each year. Those who are committed and get involved, open doors.

Our SMS Staff would like to thank everyone for their continued support of our Athletic Program at Shuswap Middle School.

SMS ATHLETICS … JANUARY 27th to JANUARY 31st

Parents and Athletes, please read the information below. It is important. Weekly Schedule for Open Gym Times and Practices can be found below in this Post.

***Gr. 6/7 Boys’ Basketball Information has been posted. Please click on the “Gr. 6/7 Boy’s Basketball tab above…

***Gr. 6/7 Boys’ Basketball 3on3 Tournament @ SMS this Wednesday, January 29th from 2:30 to 4:30.  Mr. Smith (me … I …) left my school computer at school, where the schedule is saved; therefore, I will post the schedule tomorrow morning in the “Gr. 6/7 Boys’ Basketball” tab above. For Players and Parents… The teams for the Gr. 6/7 Boys’ 3on3 Basketball Tournament will be divided into six teams. Four SMS teams will compete in the Competitive Division, which will have teams made up of Gr. 6, 7, & 8 boys. Players in the Competitive Division maybe bigger, stronger, more skilled, more experienced, and ready/able to compete with others of the same skill set. The second division we will host is a Gr. 6/7 Development Division. Players in the Development Division are developing their skills, increasing their basketball IQ, and will be competing against players who are relatively of the same skill set. Please Note: 3on3 provides ample opportunities for all players to handle the ball, make decisions, and engage in competition… unlike the 5on5 game at the elementary level, where a player can go a whole 5 minute shift without touching the ball and hide from competition, the 3on3 game forces players to actively participate, which ultimately promotes learning, growing, developing by failing, struggling, and getting better. Players will struggle. Players will be forced into awkward and uncomfortable situations on the court during competition. Players will fail and struggle. Players will make mistakes and those mistakes will be clearly visible to all watching… That’s fantastic! That’s what we, who coach the game, are looking for! As coaches we are not perfect; however, we will be making our SMS Teams for the 3on3 Tournament so that each players will be provided opportunities to benefit and grow as players and as people. All players will be challenged and by the end of the evening, all players should learn and know what they need to work on in order to improve, grow, and develop as a basketball player.

Please check the weekly schedule below… The weekly Athletic Schedule is at the end of this Post…

***Saturday night (January 25th), at Thompson Rivers University, in Kamloops, the TRU Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams are playing their last home games of the season, and it is Senior’s Night - Women play at 4PM and the Men play at 6:00PM. Former Shuswap Middle School and SAS Grad, Evan Smith will be recognized as a fifth year senior who will be graduating after five years with the WolfPack Mens’ Basketball Team and a Degree in Business Administration. As a middle school, junior high, and high school student/athlete, Evan attended all of TRU’s Senior nights over the years with his family, and as a youngster, Evan dreamt of one day playing for the WolfPack Mens’ Basketball Team. Through his hard work, dedication, commitment to excellence, and dreaming big, Evan manifested his own Senior’s Night at TRU, which will happen this Saturday. What makes the night even more special is that TRU will be playing against UNBC where current Shuswap Middle and SAS Grad Marcus Nickles is playing in his freshman year. As Evan leaves his journey as a basketball player, Marcus continues his journey as a basketball player. Over the years, Evan has mentored, trained, and worked out with Marcus, and helped the next generation see their dreams come true. It will be a special night. If time permits, load the family into the vehicle and head to the TRU Campus in Kamloops… It’s were Dreams start and for some… come true.

SMS ATHLETICS - JANUARY 13TH TO JANUARY 17TH … 2025

Parents and Athletes, please read the information below. It is important. Weekly Schedule for Open Gym Times and Practices can be found below in this Post.

***AM Basketball Continues this week… There are spaces available for some new participants. Call it an Academy, Program, Training Session, Club, whatever - I like to call it “Homework” … One wants to become a better writer or mathematician, or historian, or scientist, then one better be doing their “Homework” on a nightly and daily basis. One wants to become a better basketball player, then one better be getting into the gym everyday to work on their skills, improve on what they are not good at, and develop their game. One won’t become a better basketball player by missing practices and training sessions, or leaving early to do other things. The reality is that AM Basketball is an Opportunity to get more touches and improve one’s skill, knowledge, and game. Those who take advantage of opportunities, open more doors and from Coach Smith’s experience, who has coached basketball and volleyball for forty years in our public school system… those who consistently… without failure… attend AM Open Gym Sessions out perform, outlast, and do better than those who don’t take advantage of the opportunity.

NOTE: A notice was sent home two weeks ago highlighting the AM Basketball Training Sessions… The Opportunity is available to any Gr. 6 - 8 Student - Boy or Girl - However, students must register (bring back the signed form) by tomorrow - Monday, November 25th … Space will be limited … First come, first served. Don’t miss out on this Great Opportunity.

***Many Students are asking when Gr. 6-7 Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball begins … Those who attend and take advantage of the AM Basketball Opportunity - it begins now… Those who don’t take advantage of the AM Basketball Opportunity - it starts in January, after Christmas break.

Please check the weekly schedule below… The weekly Athletic Schedule is at the end of this Post…

Reminder… 5 Ways to Develop Mental Toughness and Resiliency …

1. Get up Early… when the alarm goes off, don’t hit the snooze … get out of bed…

2. Make Your Bed as a Habit… as soon as you get up make your bed - perfectly! Start the day with a Win!

3. Do Work… Attend AM Open Gym or if not, do push-ups, sit-ups, etc…

4. When the School Day is Over… Study First … If you have early Bball Practice, then study after practice… If you have late Bball Practice, then stay at school, attend Study Hall and Do Your Work… Read, Re-Read, Write, Re-Write, Review - That’s what homework is…

5. Eat Something You Don’t Like Regularly… as a Habit… Mr. Smith doesn’t let tomatoes be tougher than him… He still doesn’t like tomatoes, but he eats them anyway…
