Hey Folks... There have been lots of questions raised by parents about today's Gr. 8 boys' and girls' basketball tryouts - try-ons. Last week, I made announcements in our Gr. 8 PE classes and over the PA to let our grade 8's know that tryouts need to take place this week as I am attending a meeting next Monday to declare our teams at the NOAA in Vernon. We, at SMS, need to know what our teams look like so that we as an athletic association can make decisions and shape our leagues in the North Okanagan accordingly. It must be noted that grade 8 athletics is no longer a part of the elementary league in SD83. A lot of time, energy and effort goes into planning our teams and leagues. Not only do we have a responsibility as a school to be organized to the NOAA, we also have a responsibility to BC School Sports and our membership.
Practice schedules for gym time take a lot of time to organize, as does registering individual players and teams for BC School Sports. Deadlines must be met. My intention last week was to have the grade 8 athletes interested in playing basketball for SMS to communicate the tryout times with home. These times may be different than usual practice times during the season. We had to use the time in the gym available since volleyball season is still going on. I am still coaching the grade 6/7 girls and boys, the grade 8 volleyball teams; so, my own time is precious and spread thin. There is an overlap between volleyball and basketball every year. I really appreciate it when our athletes, especially our grade 8's can help in the communication with home.
Practice today for grade 8's (boys and girls) is from 4:00 to 5:30 ... Wednesday, Nov. 6th practice will be from 4:30 to 6:00.
Practice times next week for gr. 8 basketball will be on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 4:00 - 5:30 and Friday, Nov. 15, from 2:30 to 4:00.
